Pain-free Isn’t the Same as Moving Well

Strength imbalances, mobility limits, and side-to-side differences often don't hurt yet.

At Golden PT & Pilates in Golden, CO, we use strength testing, movement assessment, and Pilates to help active adults and athletes catch weaknesses before they become injuries. Here's why a proactive approach to physical therapy matters, even when you feel fine.

I really wish everyone knew that "feeling good" isn't the same as moving well. This is especially important for athletes.

You can feel fine and still have:

  • A strength imbalance

  • Decreased ankle or hip mobility

  • Poor single-leg control

  • Loss of balance

  • A movement strategy that puts extra stress on a joint

  • A weakness that only shows up when you're tired

  • A difference between your right and left sides

  • A gradual decline in strength or power that you haven't noticed yet

These things don't necessarily hurt. YET. Writing things off to "I'm getting older" isn't a very useful treatment plan.

This is where a proactive approach can make a difference. At Golden PT & Pilates, we can look at more than where it hurts. We can look at how you're moving, what you're trying to accomplish, and what may be limiting you.

We can use movement assessment, strength and balance testing, and our VALD Force Decks to give you objective information about how you're performing. We can then create a plan that fits your goals and your body where it is now. The people online telling you what works are really saying what works for them. Learning where your individual strengths and weaknesses are is paramount to investing your time wisely.

Your goals should drive your care

Maybe your goal is to finish your first 10K.

Maybe you want to make it through another ski season without your knee complaining.

Maybe you want to play Masters soccer without needing three days to recover.

Maybe you want to compete in Ultimate at 50, 60, or 70.

Maybe you want to keep hiking with your kids.

Maybe you're a competitive athlete who knows that staying healthy is part of performance.

Or maybe you simply want to get off the couch, get stronger, and feel confident in your body again.

Those are all legitimate reasons to work with a physical therapist.

And your plan should look different depending on what you're trying to accomplish. That's one reason we love incorporating Pilates into our approach.

Physical therapy + Pilates = a powerful combination

Pilates isn't just about flexibility or doing exercises on a Reformer. Pilates can be an excellent way to build strength, control, coordination, mobility, and body awareness.

At Golden PT & Pilates, we can use Pilates-based exercises as part of rehabilitation and then continue that work into fitness and wellness. Our studio offers private sessions, small-group classes, and equipment including Reformers, Towers, ExoChairs, CoreAlign, MOTR, and Konnector.

That means your care doesn't necessarily have to follow the traditional pattern of:

Injured → PT → Feel better → Done.

Instead, it can become:

Assess → Improve → Build → Maintain → Keep doing what you love.

And for an aging athlete, I think that distinction is huge.

Nancy Gonder, MSPT

I was drawn to the physical therapy profession in high school while working alongside the athletic trainer. My passion for sports, and experience with athletes of all levels, lead me to pursue my undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from University of Colorado, Boulder. I continued on to Regis University where I finished my Masters of Science in Physical Therapy in 2001. I have worked in various outpatient orthopedic settings since, including being the contract physical therapist for the Colorado Ballet, The Rocky Mountain Rage, and the Colorado 14ers. I love all sports and have played as many of them as I can find the time for.

I have a strong background in manual treatment that includes myofascial release, joint mobilization, and am Level 2 Certified in Functional Dry Needling, a powerful neurophysiological reset to help patients recover from injury and perform at their peak. I am also a Level 2 Vestibular and Balance therapist. My treatments strive to identify the root cause of an injury or limitation to create lasting solutions to help clients move better, feel better, and improve performance. I am passionate about helping patients pursue their individual goals and maintain an active lifestyle in our beautiful state. Although you will no longer find me playing tackle football or rowing for CU, you may find me playing soccer, coaching my kids, refereeing a soccer game, playing ice hockey, completing a triathlon, snowshoe racing or snowboarding.

I look forward to meeting you and am here to help with any of your physical therapy needs.
